Research abstract

CURRENT CHEMICAL ROCKET-THRUST CHAMBERS HAVE LIMITED LIVES DUE TO THE LIMITED OXIDATION PROTECTION CURRENTLY AVAILABLE. THIS IS TRUE NOT ONLY AT TEMPERATURES OF 2200 DEGREES CENTIGRADE (4000 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT), BUT AT 1100 DEGREES CENTIGRADE (2000 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT) AS WELL. A PRIME EXAMPLE IS THE SPACE SHUTTLE ORBITER VERNIER THRUSTER. THROUGH AN INNOVATIVE APPLICATION OF VAPOR-SOLID PROCESSING, A MATERIAL HAS BEEN DEVELOPED THAT CAN BE APPLIED AS A PROTECTIVE COATING WITH OUTSTANDING OXIDATION-PROTECTIVE RESULTS. PHASE I WILL DEMONSTRATE ITS APPLICABILITY TO PROTECTING CHEMICAL ROCKET-THRUST CHAMBERS FROM OXIDATION. THIS MATERIAL HAS THE POTENTIAL TO EXTEND THRUST-CHAMBER LIFETIMES BY AN ORDEROF MAGNITUDE.
