Research abstract
SPARTAN (Secure Path-routing with Autonomous Resilience for Targeting and Adaptive Navigation) is an advanced, AI-driven protocol designed to enhance UAV swarm autonomy, resilience, and communication security in high-threat, low-communication environments. Integrating multi-modal sensor fusion, autonomous decision-making, and post-quantum secure communications, SPARTAN enables precision tracking and situational awareness across a swarm even under signal interference. SPARTAN’s sensor fusion capabilities allow for high-accuracy tracking in contested airspace by leveraging passive and active sensors such as RF and EO. Advanced AI models, including multi-agent reinforcement learning and spatial-temporal graph neural networks, equip each UAV with adaptive, decentralized decision-making, enabling them to adjust paths, maintain coordination, and respond dynamically to changing conditions and threats without centralized control. The protocol’s architecture includes real-time probabilistic reasoning models, such as Bayesian Networks, to ensure reliable inference from sparse or noisy data. This approach guarantees continuous situational awareness and operational stability in environments with limited communication. LSTM-based data fusion synchronizes asynchronous sensor inputs, minimizing latency and enhancing real-time responsiveness while reducing false association rates and improving target tracking in complex airspaces. For secure inter-UAV communication, SPARTAN incorporates post-quantum cryptography (PQC) optimized for efficient, low-overhead data transmission, securing mission-critical data against quantum-enabled adversaries. With Hiding-in-Plain-Sight (HiPS) technology, SPARTAN obfuscates data exchanges within benign network traffic, evading detection and supporting covert operations in contested zones. Binary-packing data compression further enables high-throughput, resilient communication, decreasing reliance on centralized structures and enhancing overall swarm robustness.SPARTAN provides a transformative capability for UAV swarm operations across defense and commercial applications through high-precision sensor fusion, adaptive autonomy, and quantum-resistant secure communication. Its decentralized framework delivers unprecedented resilience, flexibility, and security against cyber threats, making it an ideal solution for ISR missions, infrastructure monitoring, and disaster response.
