Research abstract

78413SThe international high-energy physics community has decided to develop superconducting radio frequency (RF) technolgy to be the basis for the International Linear Collider, a 0.5 - 1.0 TeV electron-positron collider that is intended to complement the Large Hadron Collider. The 1.3 GHz RF power needed to drive this accelerator is now planned to be supplied by 600-1200, 10-MW peak power multi-beam klystrons. As an alternative to the klystrons, this project will explore the use of 20-MW peak power magnicons, which offer the possibility of cutting in half the numbers of high-power tubes and associated components. In Phase I, simulation codes will be run to refine the designs for: an electron gun with minimum electric field, the RF cavity system to provide maximum interaction efficiency, the beam collector to provide efficient disposition of unexpended beam power, and the magnetic system. Then, these designs will be integrated into a coordinated design for engineering, fabrication, and test during Phase II and beyond. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the applicant: A 20 MW magnicon, suitable for the ILC, should generate a market for 300 of these tubes for the 0.5 TeV accelerator, and 600 for the 1.0 TeV up-grade. This represents a potential market of hundreds of million of dollars.
