Research abstract

THE CONTINUED REPLACEMENT OF HYPOCHLORITE WITH ECOLOGICALLY-COMPATIBLE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE REQUIRES A NEUTRAL, ON-SITE PEROXIDE SOURCE. PRESENTLY, THE ONLY AVAILABLE ON-SITE TECHNOLOGY IS THE ELECTROCHEMICAL PRODUCTION OF CAUSTIC (PH 14) PEROXIDE. THE HIGH PH AND HIGH COST (DUE PRINCIPALLY TO SODIUM HYDROXIDE REAGENT) OF THIS PEROXIDE SOURCE LIMITS ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS. RESEARCHERS ARE DEVELOPING AN ON-SITE PEROXIDE GENERATOR REQUIRING NO REAGENTS, AND WILL SAVE WATER AND POWER, BASED ON AN ELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNIQUE EMPLOYING ANION EXCHANGE MEMBRANES. THE CATHODIC REDUCTION OF OXYGEN TO PEROXIDE IN BASE HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE HIGHLY EFFICIENT. THE INCORPORATION OF ANION EXCHANGE MEMBRANES IN A FUEL CELL ARRANGEMENT WILL UTILIZE THIS CHEMISTRY BUT WILL ELIMINATE THE FREE FLOWING CAUSTIC AS INPUT, THUS PRODUCING ONLY NEUTRAL PEROXIDE.
