Research abstract

Existing ship defense systems are designed to thwart high-speed anti-ship missiles, but it is conceivable that a large number of low-cost airborne or surface attack craft could be lethal and/or extremely expensive to defend against. Ships' gun systems aremuch lower cost per round, but at long range it would be difficult to hit a small evasive target. Therefore it is desirable to develop a new, low-cost means of countering such threats by equipping projectiles with maneuvering and guidance capabilityincluding a low-cost seeker. New gun-launched projectile designs based on technology used in precision guided missiles and bombs have already been developed. Toyon Research Corporation proposes to develop a new low-cost seeker compatible with the Mk-64family of five-inch projectiles. The seeker will use a conformal antenna constructed of materials that will withstand gun launch temperature, pressure, and shock.
