Research abstract

65500 Plasma fusion experiments and simulation codes generate ever larger data sets, which must be analyzed and visualized rapidly. However, present commercial software packages for analysis and visualization of scientific data cannot effectively process terabyte or multi-gigabyte data sets, because they use only a single processor. Such applications are too slow for interactive use and also require a computer with enough dynamic memory to hold a significant fraction of the entire data set. This project will develop a parallel implementation for a commercial application that is widely used within the plasma fusion community. The parallel implementation will run on an arbitrary number of processors, enabling fusion energy scientists to interactively analyze and visualize large data sets in parallel. In Phase I, a prototype of the parallel data analysis and visualization software will be developed. This prototype will be used with data from an active tokamak experiment to demonstrate its value to the plasma fusion community. The performance increase using many processors will be demonstrated. An approach to parallel volume visualization of a scalar field relevant to tokamak experiments will also be investigated. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: A parallel implementation of existing commercial software for data analysis and visualization should directly benefit fusion energy scientists who must analyze and visualize large experimental and simulated data sets. Other markets include medical imaging.
