Research abstract

The following proposal describes a system which can be used for either surf zone and craft landing zone obstacle reconnaissance or clearance missions. The system, referred to a Sea Dog is a more sophisticated and capable version of the Lemmings surf zone mine neutralization munitions. The principle behind the Sea Dog concept is to swarm an area with inexpensive semi-sophisticated "smart" munitions. Using several Sea Dog units a simple random pattern has been shown to provide a high degree of coverage over tactically useful areas. Using near-field sensing elements, instrumentation can be kept inexpensive permitting sensor integration. A simple decision matrix described herein can distinguish all common threat obstacles and mines. An interchangeable payload can be used to neutralize the threat using either bulk or flying plate technology, or a navigation and communication system can be used to covertly report the location (within 1 ft) of discovered obstacles. A complete map of the beach SZ and CLZ defenses can be quickly and covertly assembled with little asset or financial risk.
