Research abstract

To address the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) need for automated video analysis capabilities that enhance airport security and screening processes, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop the On-Person Screening Stream of Commerce Analysis (OSSCA) system. The innovations in using a new microservice-based video analytics framework and attention-based algorithms will enable OSSCA to automatically analyze video streams from airport surveillance cameras; detect and track individuals; identify anthropometric characteristics, clothing articles, shoe types, and visible accessories; and classify these features in real time. The system will automatically alert operators with flags and detailed reports for adjudication, offering automated video analytics and human-machine teaming capabilities to improve situational awareness and operational efficiency. In Phase I, Intellisense will demonstrate the feasibility of OSSCA by developing its system design, identifying software and hardware requirements, assembling benchmark datasets, and defining performance measurement metrics. An initial Phase I prototype system will be integrated to evaluate and demonstrate OSSCA’s video analytics algorithms. In Phase II, Intellisense will mature the system design and develop a fully functional prototype incorporating human-machine teaming to automate video analysis for operational testing. The successful completion of OSSCA’s automated video analytics and human-machine teaming capabilities at the end of Phase III will benefit the nation in both government and commercial sectors. Commercial applications of this technology include video intelligence, security screening, retail analytics, and public space surveillance.
