Research abstract

Benefits:Several new zinc nickel plating chemistries have been developed but they have not been tested to ensure they give adequate performance for aerospace use; another effort in this testing will validate the performance of the new zinc nickel plating chemistries that are available. Many aerospace applications have a need for corrosion protection in systems that operate or are exposed to elevated temperatures. Cadmium is not an option at elevated temperatures due to its low melting point, but the new zinc nickel that is being used as a cadmium alternative has a much higher melting point and could provide performance benefits at higher temperatures. Testing is needed to qualify zinc nickel for use at elevated temperatures. The Objective of this testing is to qualify zinc nickel for use in the much-needed higher temperature applications and also validate the performance of other newly developed zinc nickel plating chemistries which would alleviate logistics problems with procurement of zinc nickel coated parts. Particular emphasis shall be given on using AMS2461 which is also a recently released standard for plating Zn-Ni.
