Research abstract

Maintaining the DoD fleet of aircraft requires replacement of components that are typically produced from castings and forgings. These replacement parts have long lead times and require minimum order quantities (MOQ) that far exceed the requirement. Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) enables printing near net shape form, with forging-like properties, which can then be machined to a component final geometry with minimal material waste. AFSD will greatly alleviate supply chain issues by enabling replacement of components that are difficult to source and will add flexibility to the industrial base production line, in accordance with E.O. 14017. Under this program, the ES3 team will utilize AFSD for manufacture of critical gas turbine engine components that are in short supply or difficult to procure; the technology/process enables the Air Force to remain ready amid the Great Power Competition (GPC).
