Research abstract

It is proposed to develop a noise cancellation system suitable for quieting a variety of shipboard duct and compartment arrangements. The objective is to attenuate airborne gas turbine and ventilation system noise transmitted through intake and exhaust ducting to critical ship spaces. The system will allow integrated design of the airpaths, structures, and active and passive attenuation devices to provide reliable, compact, and effective reduction of air flow noise critical to ship performance. Foster-Miller has demonstrated active signature reduction technology in reducing magnetic signatures of electromagnetic systems, attaining signature reduction levels of over 30 dB. The bond graph general multidomain system modeling capability developed at Foster-Miller for a variety of other applications can be applied to the proposed noise reduction system. The Phase I program will concentrate on design and development of a bond graph simulation and design tool to develop and demonstrate noise attenuation throughout spaces in a ship. The Phase I Option will provide the opportunity for experimental demonstration of this technique. The Work Plan describes the specific approach which will be used to develop the simulation and design capability.
