Research abstract
The Common Munitions BIT Reprogramming Equipment (CMBRE) system development began in 1996. CMBRE is now used by the Air Force, Navy, Marines, Army, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve Command, and 31 foreign military sales (FMS) countries at over 200 facilities across the globe. It is expected to be in use until at least 2035. The tester is critical for testing JDAM, WCMD, MALD, PAVEWAY, JSOW, JASSM, SLAM-ER, SDB, BRU-61A, AIM-9X, and AMRAAM munitions. It is used to initiate built-in test (BIT), reprogram the Operational Flight Programs (OFPs) for MIL-STD-1760/non-1760 smart bombs and missiles, upload mission planning, and upload/download Global Positioning System (GPS) crypto keys. In 2006, the original CMBRE was updated to become the CMBRE Plus, and an update to produce the CMBRE CE began in 2015. Supporting the CMBRE system are two adapter units—the ADU-890 and ADU-891. The ADU-890 provides support for the BRU-61 bomb rack and four GRU-39 small diameter bombs, and the ADU-891 supports AIM-120 and AIM-9X munitions. Certain BRU-61 racks operate from 270 VDC on advanced airframes, so that a 270 VDC testing capability is needed. The proposed design effort addresses this capability gap.
