Research abstract

The current system (VALTS) used to characterize the fragment field during warhead arena tests has several serious short comings. Significant ambiguity occurs because the spatial resolution of the current screens is modest and does not allow a unique association of a pulse with a retrieved fragment. Sequential fragments produce separate electrical pulses and screen holes but the fragment associated timing sequence cannot be deduced. Closely spaced fragments cannot be resolved and the arrival of the blast wave can result in unreliable screen performance. SPI proposes to develop an augmented or alternate screen which has the capability to resolve these issues. Two distinct concepts will be avaluated during the Phase I program. Both retain the approximately 32 ft2 area of the current screens thereby maintaining the same number of data channels. One approach provides information regarding the applied force whereas the other provides location within 1% of the screen area in addition to occurrence time. The proposed program will evaluate both approaches, select one and demonstrate feasibility and provide a Phase II program plan which will result in the delivery of a prototype system to AFDTC.
