Research abstract

A novel design approach is proposed that will allow operating a longwave infrared imaging spectrometer sensor with uncooled opto- mechanical components. This proposal is for the technology demonstration and design validation investigation. The concept is based on earlier work at NASA in remote sensing and in IR imaging spectroscopy, and the proposed investigation will capitalize on a JPL investment of $200,000 in labor and developmental hardware. OKSI, and JPD will jointly develop a demonstrate the first functional, room-temperature-optics, thermal-infrared imaging spectrometer for environmental remote sensing. The proposed development will be bolstered by two concurrent OKSI collaborations that will supplement the TRP/SBIR resources at no direct cost of the program. 1) The Institute of Environmental Management, at the University of Oklahoma will provide overall guidance in relation to hazardous materials identification methods and data processing, site selection and field testing of the sensor. Preliminary analysis indicates that remote sensing using thermal infrared imaging spectroscopy is an effective technology for the detection and identification of various hazardous sustances controlled under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment, and illicuit drugs and chemical weapons manufacturing facilities. 2) Under the Visiting Investigator Program, OKSI and NASA Stennis Space Center will jointly conduct market/technology and end-user requirements/commercialization analyses. A major dual-use aspect of the technology relates to hyperspectral automated target recognition, and to mapping and geographical information systems. Anticipated Benefits: Imaging spectroscopy applications are growing at an explosive rate. The proposed technology will lead to the establishment of the first commercial service providing imaging spectroscopy in the thermal infrared. Applications include environmental monitoring (superfund site monitoring, rapid response for monitoring accidental spills and releases), law enforcement (search for illicit drugs production facilities), and geological, soil and plant studies.
