Research abstract

IN ORDER TO GUIDE THE DESIGNS OF ADVANCED GAS TURBINE ENGINES, THERE IS A NEED FOR PREDICTIVE MODELS OF SOOT FORMATION AND RADIATION IN THE HIGH PRESSURE COMBUSTION OF FUTURE PRACTICAL HYDROCARBON FUELS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUCHMODELS REQUIRES A FUNDAMENTAL DATA BASE, IN THE APPROPRIATE PRESSURE REGIMES, ELUCIDATING THE MECHANISMS GOVERNING POLYCYCLIC MOLECULAR GROWTH, OXIDATIVE INHIBITION OF SOOTING, AND SOOT PARTICLE NUCLEATION AND GROWTH. WE PROPOSE TO USE ADVANCED OPTICAL SHOCK TUBE TECHNIQUES EXTANT IN OUR LABORATORY TO PROVIDE A DATA BASE AGAINST WHICH TO TEST MODELING CONCEPTS.
