Research abstract

Fully electromagnetic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation, with high spatial resolution over slow time scales, is needed to model phenomena ranging from the propagation of particle beams in accelerators to the radio frequency (RF) current drive in fusion plasmas. This simulation requires an implicit Maxwell solver that conserves charge, has good numerical dispersion properties, and scales well. In previous work, new algorithm was developed. This algorithm, the Space-Charge Conserving (SCC) Alternating-Direction Implicit (ADI) Maxwell solver, generates a large number of independent tri-diagonal linear systems, which could be efficiently solved with the Concurrent Divide and Conquer (CD&D) technique. This project will apply CD&D to the SCC ADI solver and implement the solver in the VORPAL code. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new SCC ADI solver would facilitate simulations of the International Linear Collider and the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. In addition, SCC ADI would allow VORPAL to be applied to even more challenging problems and should increase its commercial value.
