Research abstract

PSI's CAD approach to discrete event modeling and simulatin has cut large scale simulation life cycle by as much as an order of magnitude. This approach, based upon significant departures in technical concept and approach, prvides ease of control and reuse of complex models. It has broken the barriers to modeling complex systems, yeilding the very high resolution models required to insure validity. This is done by achieving model independence through graphically enforced architectual design rules and a fully automated user-friendly environment. This success has resulted in huge simulations that meet customer validity constraints and has promted the need for even higher levels of simulation integration. As an extension to the above graphical CAD approach to model design, PSI has developed a simulation run-time graphic system to illustrate the activites of the simulation as it unfolds and interact with the simualation as it is running. For the Phase I effort, PSI proposes to explore and demonstrate advanced run-time graphics facilities for heirarchical icons chich support, for example, the deployment of an aggregate facility such as a shelter, and the puch-down of this facility into basic entities, such as various switches of different types, with appropriate graphic interaction at each level in the heirarchy. In addition, heirarchical icon movement where icons contain sub-icons that move independentl of each other, but relative to the next level in the heirarchy will be demonstrated.
