Research abstract

Driver fatigue is a pervasive operational risk that requires active mitigation by commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operators and cooperation with such efforts by drivers. CMV carriers have the responsibility to set policies and dispatch drivers in a way that provides for adequate rest opportunity. However, giving drivers adequate time off does not guarantee that they will be rested when commencing duty. It is therefore a further responsibility of CMV carriers to verify that drivers are adequately alert and fit for duty. This project will deliver PVT DriveFit as an interoperable module within the Trucking Fatigue Meter software platform with additional components to support: (1) driver training; (2) coaching; (3) wearable data integration; and (4) fatigue risk management program promotion.
