Research abstract

A roadmap for affordability will be developed in Phase I based on Robust Design Simulaton(RDS) which will be applied in Phase II to address affordability design tradeoffs for propulsion system technologies in V/STOL aircraft. The V-22 tilt rotor aircraft with the T-406 engine will be used as the baseline V/STOL aircraft for affordability measurement verification and validation of the RDS. The proposed research will serve as the Current Development linkage between the current ONR initial Research and Theoretical Development Program, being conducted by universities and the Verification and Validation effort involving industry and Navy project offices. The integration of synthesis/sizing models with life cycle cost (LCC) analysis for V/STOL aircraft will be accomplished in Phase II. Historical databases in the synthesis/sizing models and LCC analysis will be replaced with data generated from physics-based disciplinary models and activity and process-based cost models, respectively. Affordability design tradeoffs for propulsion system technologies applied to the V-22/T406 baseline will be assessed using the RDS as a prediction technology in Phase II.
