Research abstract

65276 he threat that aggressive forces will use biological agents against U.S. military or civilian populations is now upon us. One of the greatest threats is that those agents will be added to water supplies or treatment systems. Species of Brucella and Escherichia coli are two likely candidates for use as biological agents. This project will utilize an innovative amplifying fluorescent polymer (AFP) that provides the requisite level of sensitivity for detecting biological agents in the aqueous matrix. Conjugated with monoclonal antibodies for Brucella and Escherichia coli, the AFP structure will be implemented as a sensor platform for this application. Phase I will use a proven protocol to attach a structure to the polymer. The sensor platform will be exposed to the target pathogens in a water matrix to prove that the device is capable of detecting the two test species. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology should be of value to military and anti-terrorism forces for detection of biological threats. The same technology also could be applied to the detection of other bio-medical analytes. For example, by using antibodies for pathogens of interest to health care specialists, the technology can be used to detect health threats.
