Research abstract

THE PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF A NEW FAMILY OF CHEMICAL SENSORS BASED UPON ABSORPTION OF NEAR INFRARED LASER DIODE RADIATION WILL BE INVESTIGATED. THESE WILL PROVIDE SPECIES SELECTIVE QUANTIFICATION OVER A LARGE DYNAMIC RANGE. USE OFEXISTING SEMICONDUCTOR LASER AND FIBER OPTIC TECHNOLOGY WILLRESULT IN RELIABLE, INEXPENSIVE DEVICES SUITABLE FOR AUTOMATED CONTROL. MULTIPLE REMOTE SENSORS CAN BE LINKED TOA CENTRAL READOUT DEVICE OVER KILOMETERS OF FIBEROPTIC CABLE. THE OUTPUT WAVELENGTH OF THE DIODE LASER WILL BE LOCKED INTO COINCIDENCE WITH THE INFRARED ABSORPTION OF A SPECIES OF INTEREST USING A REFERENCE SAMPLE CONTAINED IN THE CENTRAL UNIT. ABSORPTION IN THE REMOTE SENSORS WILL BE COMPARED TO THE REFERENCE ABSORPTION TO QUANTIFY THE SPECIESCONCENTRATION AT THE REMOTE SENSORS.
