Research abstract

79540S Detailed studies of carbon sequestration, atmospheric chemistry, and pollution transport in the troposphere, on both large and small spatial scales, are limited by the availability of reliable, precise, sensitive, and accurate gas measurement instrumentation that is easy to use and yields real-time results in the field with fast response. This project will develop a rugged instrument based on a novel technology called Off-Axis Integrated Cavity Output Spectroscopy (ICOS), along with state-of-the-art diode lasers and quantum-cascade lasers, to accurately measure the concentrations and fluxes of multiple important atmospheric carbonaceous gases (13CO2, 12CO2, CH4, CO) simultaneously at 10-Hz rate. The instrument will be autonomous, easy-to-use, and uniquely capable of providing real-time measurements of important species in the field and on-board aircraft. In Phase I, an Off-Axis ICOS instrument for measurements of the target species will be designed, built and tested, based on cavity enhanced absorption in the infrared region using room temperature diode lasers and a quantum cascade laser. Measurements will be performed on calibrated gas standards to determine the accuracy, sensitivity, and time response of the instrument. A Phase II instrument, capable of operation in the field and on-board aircraft will be designed, and the costs for building and selling the instruments will be estimated. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The instrument should find use in atmospheric studies, medical diagnostics to detect common diseases, and monitoring and control of several industrial processes.
