Research abstract

Rampart Communications, Inc. will partner with Thales Defense & Security to deliver two (2) Thales Spear (AN/PRC-148E) radios, which will host a Unitary Braid Division Multiplexing (UBDM)-enabled waveform to ensure ultra-secure, Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) communications. UBDM transforms a waveform’s modulated symbols into random-appearing Gaussian noise and provides 256-bit cryptographic strength to all information-carrying symbols at the physical layer. Without the required encryption key, adversaries can not demodulate the signal. This physical layer innovation represents the next generation of robust wireless security, maximizing communication security and resilience without introducing new trade offs in waveform performance. In this Phase II, Rampart will demonstrate the benefits of UBDM to facilitate a resilient, un-denied communications system in tactical environments. This effort extends the work completed in the Phase I effort that outlined how to implement UBDM on an SDR for securely transmitting data in tactical environments on a point-to-point terrestrial radio. This core technology will serve as the basis for further development to provide Transmission Security (TRANSEC).
