Research abstract

40915 November 18, 1996 Federal Fabrics-Fibers, Inc. Ultracapacitors, when combined with batteries, can yield high performance electrical energy storage systems for electric vehicles. While batteries handle the relatively low average power demand, the ultracapacitors would handle short power peaks during acceleration, braking, and hill climbing. This project will combine two seemingly competing technologies, carbon double layer capacitance and pseudo capacitance phenomena, in order to develop a ¿synergetic¿ ultracapacitor. Advanced pseudo capacitance will be superimposed on top of a previously developed carbon ultracapacitor for the ultimate electrical power storage device. Manufacturing analyses indicate a price of $2/Wh for the device in mass production. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: Applications include electrical load leveling for portable electronics, wireless communication, electrical grid power line conditioning, electrical automotive vehicles, actuators and health care medical devices.
