Research abstract

A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM TO PREPARE AND CHARACTERIZE NOVEL SOLID POLYMER ELECTROLYTES POSSESSING A ROOM TEMPERATURE CONDUCTIVITY GREATER THAN 10(-3) OHM(-1)CM(-1) AND ELECTROCHEMICAL OXIDATIVE STABILITY EXCEEDING 4.5 V VERSUS LI(+)/LI IS PLANNED. THESE ELECTROLYTES ARE OF CONSIDERABLE IMPORTANCE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH VOLTAGE LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES SUCH AS THOSE CONTAINING A CARBON ANODE AND A LITHIUM COBALT OXIDE (LICOO2) CATHODE. THE PHASE I EFFORT INVOLVES PREPARATION OF THE POLYMER ELECTROLYTES, DETERMINATION OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL STABILITY AND CONDUCTIVITY OF THE POLYMER ELECTROLYTES, STUDIES OF THE THERMAL STABILITY OF THE POLYMER ELECTROLYTES, AND MEASUREMENT OF THE CATION TRANSFERENCE NUMBER OF THE ELECTROLYTES. IN PHASE II, THE ELECTROLYTES WILL BE OPTIMIZED AND THEN OPTIMIZED IN LITHIUM-ION ANODE BATTERIES. THIS WILL REQUIRE THE FABRICATION AND TESTING OF MONOPOLAR AND BIPOLAR BATTERIES.
