Research abstract

An assessment technique comparing advanced point recognition terrain marking concepts is proposed for the purpose of establshing system requirements that service various users, specifically pilots and ground support troops. Potential advanced terrain marking concepts currently considered will be judged in a user based forum, via interviews and field trials using "Quick Fix" prototypes participating in battle labs, combat training, or similar exercises. Concurrently, an engineering tradeoff analysis will judge the concepts on the basis of acquisition range, acquisition type (IR, MM wave, RF, and visual), and manufacturing potential. Program goals are to define notional requirements evolved from the investigatrion and then select the best two candidates based on their ability to meet those requirements. THe Phase I modification task would initiate the design of the two candidate concepts for Phase II field tests. Foster-Miller, Inc (FMI), in concert with ERDEC has developed a proven acquisition range assessment tool to be used in the evaluation of visually acquired tarpaulin systems. Coupled with our experience in both manufacture and innovative application of thin film technology as it applies to 3D decoys, FMI feels that these technologies can be fit tegether to create a structural marker which satisfies all of the Forward Air Control requirements for Close Air Support cueing.
