Research abstract

THALLIUM BROMIDE (T1BR) IS A NEW CUBIC SEMICONDUCTOR. THE HIGH ATOMIC NUMBERS OF ITS CONSTITUENT ELEMENTS GIVES IT EXTRAORDINARY PHOTOELECTRIC ABSORPTION EFFICIENCY FOR GAMMA PHOTONS, WHILE ITS 2.5 EV BANDGAP PROMISES PERFORMANCE AT TEMPERATURES UP TO 250XC. IT HAS SHOWN SOME PROMISE AS AHIGH EFFICIENCY SOLID-STATE DETECTOR, BUT EARLY DEVICES WERELIMITED BY MATERIAL IMPURITIES AND IMPERFECTIONS. IN PHASE I WE PROPOSE TO RESEARCH PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES NEEDED TO PREPARE HIGH PURITY CRYSTALS WITH SUFFICIENT CHARGE TRANSPORT PROPERTIES FOR NUCLEAR DETECTORS. IN PHASE II WE WILL RESEARCH TECHNIQUES TO PREPARE LARGE SINGLE CRYSTALS AND CONTACT STRUCTURES TO OPTIMIZE THE NUCLEAR DETECTION CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS NOVEL MATERIAL.
