Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. proposes a small arms scoring system based on a unique and innovative application of interferometry. The system is precise enough to satisfy the accuracy requirements of the Army Test and Evaluation Command and is immune from temperature and humidity effects. Any caliber munition from 22 caliber to >40 mm can be scored at velocities up to and exceeding 1550 m/s. In contrast to acoustic systems, the performance of the PSI technique actually improves for lower velocity munitions. A side benefit is that the projectile velocity is determined as well. The technique is not unlike methods used widely for precision metrology; however PSI has tailored and simplified the technique for application to real-world problems. As a result, the PSI approach overcomes the negative aspects of conventional interferometry. PSI has removed the phase ambiguity from the measurement. The PSI approach requires no fiducial reference and performs well for transient targets. The technology has wide commercial and industrial application, where precision metrology is desired, but where the disadvantages of traditional interferometry make it impractical. PSI approach is well suited for moderate precision metrology in hostile environments. Some applications include: in-situ inspection of mechanical parts under hostile conditions, determination of actuator or flow valve positions for process control, positioning of components for milling or machining operations, and determination of liquid levels in tanks.
