Research abstract

Dirac Solutions Inc. (DSI) proposes an aircrew portal wearable medical sensor system, incorporating PhysMon sensors for physiological monitoring, integrated with secure wireless communications links. This system targets the reduction of unexplained physiological events (PEs) during flight operations. Previous research and development have successfully tested various PhysMon sensors, including those for heart rate, EKG, EEG, and pulse oximetry (SpO2).Specifically, to utilize the potential of PhysMon sensor data in mitigating PEs, DSI proposes a secure body area network integrated with a secure ultra-wideband (UWB) long-range link. This network will transmit collected data securely to base medical analysis and intervention. Navy requires a more secure data transmission method than current Bluetooth technology. Proposed innovations include ensuring wireless reliability, meeting Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) requirements, and optimizing battery lifespan. In Phase II, DSI plans to design, develop, and demonstrate the proposed FCC-approved low-power body area network with UWB links. The design is based on FCC regulations allowing the use of Medical Body Area Network (MBAN) devices in the 2.4 GHz frequency band—an area where DSI has previous experience developing sensor network systems.
