Research abstract

To address the U.S. Army's requirement for a compact, energy-efficient non-RF transceiver capable of wireless communication between two points, we propose the Acoustic Transceiver Alternative Communicator (ATAC). Acoustics was selected as the best medium after considering the drawbacks of optics, which require clear sight lines and good weather, and magnetics, which can be disrupted by metal and have a shorter range. The primary innovation behind ATAC is the development of a long-range acoustic modulation-demodulation method that can operate effectively in harsh environments with reverberations or multiple signal paths, while also enabling covert operations in challenging conditions. Key features of ATAC include: (1) Effective transmission and reception of signals within a range of up to 300 meters. (2) Asynchronous operation with low energy consumption, ensuring extended battery life of at least 800 hours for prolonged field deployment. (3) Compact design for easy deployment and concealment in various operational scenarios. (4) Secure, stealth communication for discreet military operations in sensitive operations. (5) Compatibility with a wide range of remote sensors, allowing seamless integration and control in surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The ATAC is a versatile, reliable alternative to RF communications, designed to improve security and efficiency for modern military communications needs.
