Research abstract

SYSTRAN proposes to design (in Phase I), develop, prototype, and demonstrate (in Phase II) and manufacture, market, and sell (in Phase III) a family of DIS (Distributive Interactive Simulation) compliant NIUs (Network Interface Units). These NIUs, denoted SNAPpy will incorporate functions, features, and benefits from WL/FIGD SNAP (Simulator Network Analysis Project) activities, such as GPS (Global Positioning System) time stamps, and a new-generation, production quality EVDAS (Electronic Visual Display Attitude Sensor). Currently, DIS NIUs are typically implemented on expensive CPUs, such as Silicon Graphics Reality Engines. Recently reported techniques for filtering DIS packets to a set 'needed' by a DIS receiver will be reviewed and, in conjunction with on-going DIS-driven activities, will be incorporated into the SNAPpy design. Current SNAP instrumentation (two chassis without NIU capability), and prototyped and demonstrated (in Phase II). Two bus standards will be considered: VME and the emerging PCI (Peripheral Components Interconnect) to provide insights into two possible implementations: A VME 'crate' and a PC-platform with, perhaps, Windows NT. As the cost/performance ratio of CPU capability continues to improve, this latter implementation becomes more realizable.
