Research abstract

Building on our previous experience in pulsed-discharged-based optical diagnostics, Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) will construct, calibrate, and deliver a prototype, real-time monitor for lead. Employing laser-induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS), the prototype will allow quantitative lead detection in paint and on firing ranges. A pulsed Nd/YAG laser will generate the breakdown. Fiber-optic delivery of the laser pulse will be employed for paint monitoring. We will determine if reliable air breakdown in dusty air can be achieved using a fiber optic for range monitoring. Both tapered and straight fibers will be tested. Simple lens focusing will be employed otherwise. The monitor will have nanosecond scale temporal resolution, data averaging, and a real-time readout. A simple, narrow-band interference filter centered a 405.78 nm will provide spectral resolution. Monitor calibrations will be performed using dry aerosols with varying concentrations of lead salt for range monitoring and paints spiked with varying concentrations of a lead salt. Detection limits will be established for each application. A preliminary design for a more flexible instrument to monitor RCRA metal will be made and the potential applications for this instrument investigated.
