Research abstract

Foster-Miller proposes to demonstrate a compact, rugged imaging spectrometer based on a novel principle of operation using holographic optics, based on a design suggested by Whitecomb and Lyons at Rowe Laboratory. The key advance is a new electro-optical materials technology, originally developed for Air Force Wright Laboratory laser hardening applications, which enables diffractive lenses to be switched among several focal lengths of wavelengths. During Phase I, optimization of the material chemistry will adapt this material for the spectrometer application by reducing optical crosstalk and a series of test lens will be fabricated and characterized. In Phase II, a complete visible/near IR imaging spectrometer system will be constructed and demonstrated. In Phase III, Foster-Miller will have the opportunity to commercialize this technology through its Sensiv subsidiary, which makes and sells remote spectroscopy instruments.
