Research abstract

To address the Navy’s need for more accurate weather sensing technologies to assess local microclimates for fleet operations, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop a new Integrated Weather Observing System for Maritime (IWOS-M) applications. Intellisense’s IWOS weather station is a robust, fully automated weather station designed for land-based tactical use. Intellisense proposes to augment the existing technology readiness level 9 IWOS technology with improved electronics and housing designs to employ the system in shipboard extreme maritime environments. Intellisense will integrate improved metal shielding and other circuit-level changes to produce a design that meets challenging shipboard electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility requirements. As a result, this system offers a robust system for fully automated in situ measurement of all parameters required to produce a typical synoptic observation. This will reduce resource requirements for shipboard weather operators in nominal conditions; in data-denied conditions, the IWOS-M will provide users with accurate, local weather that is not currently available. Intellisense plans to develop an innovative weather camera imaging module that will enable real-time sea-state measurement, situational awareness and image-based weather sensing using an onboard thermal imaging system. In Phase II, Intellisense will develop the core IWOS-M by developing, manufacturing, and testing a system consisting of temperature, pressure, humidity, and IMU-based sea state sensors. The design will be tested in simulated maritime environments and iterated, as necessary. In the Option period, Intellisense will develop the advanced camera imager and perform real-world shipboard testing.
