Research abstract

High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) electrically small antennas have high radiation efficiency and directivity that is clearly superior to conventional metal antenna systems. These small antennas have correspondingly small radar cross sections (RCS) that can all but be eliminated on demand by making the radiating element lossy. In the present Phase I feasibility study, we will undertake two innovative switching approaches that can deactivate the antenna element within a few microseconds involving a relatively mature silicon on sapphire (SOS) technology. The approach will require HTS film deposition, design, fabrication and testing of the switch using a discrete MOS device mounted on a coplanar HTS line deposited on sapphire substrates. We will investigate processing techniques in Phase I. Fabrication of complete antenna systems will be undertaken in Phase II efforts.
