Research abstract

78957S The overload of sensor data and related analyses demand the development of distributed systems for management of associated metadata on a semantic level that enable efficient decision making. Although significant advancements have been made in emerging semantic technologies, a critical missing piece is an integrated, collaborative, and distributed system for the optimized processing of sensor related metadata. This project will develop an integrated system for knowledge management of sensor associated metadata. The system will support ontologies, dynamic and static knowledge bases, advanced querying capabilities, and efficient data storage and retrieval to enable fundamentally improved decision making and reasoning capabilities. Phase I will investigate a number of possible components for the management of heterogeneous sensor metadata: the emerging Resource Description Framework and its extension, the OWL Web Ontology Language; technologies for networked data services; and relevant database systems. The components will be evaluated on a specifically designed ontology and data, in order to select the most appropriate components as the basis for building an integrated system in Phase II. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The semantic knowledge management system should be directly applicable to problems involving the integration of distributed data sets from processed sensor data and imagery analyses to enable situation assessment and decision making.
