Research abstract

78980B Dielectric wakefield acceleration is presently being studied intensively as a promising technique for advanced high-energy accelerators. Because the reduction of power attenuation is a fundamental issue for the efficiency of any accelerating structure, this project will develop a Multilayer Dielectric Loaded Accelerating (DLA) structure that will have dramatically improved attenuation compared to the conventional dielectric-loaded structures. The dielectric layers provide a number of boundaries that reduce overall attenuation in the structure. In Phase I, several multilayered DLA structures will be manufactured to demonstrate the first multilayered DLA experimentally. First, a 34.272 GHz double-layered structure, using alumina and MCT-40 composite ceramic as the dielectric loading materials, will be simulated and designed. Also, a double-layered 11.424 GHz accelerating structure of alumina and MCT-30 ceramics will be manufactured. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should accelerate progress toward the use of dielectric structure technology for efficient cost effective future high energy electron accelerators. The ceramic material development process, as well as multilayered ceramic waveguide technology, should find additional applications in the microwave industry and the growing wireless market, where 10-30 GHz ceramic multilayer resonators are in a great demand.
