Research abstract

Emerging hardware architectures offer attractive performance opportunities for those software applications that are able to exploit them. However, many scientific codes written over the last decade require an intensive porting effort in order to take advantage of new hardware architectures. Component-based software architectures can ameliorate this effort by making it possible to develop interoperable scientific codes, wherein individual components can be tailored to leverage new architectural developments in hardware. In order to demonstrate the utility of this technology, this project will develop a component-based software architecture for an accelerator physics application. Namely, a component-based, beam dynamics application will be developed from a set of services that are currently provided by two separate accelerator physics packages (Synergia and MaryLie/Impact) and one high-performance computer science package (PETSc). Phase I will: (1) address the multilanguage interoperability issues presented by the MaryLie/Impact code; (2) create components by making the selected software objects adhere to the Common Component Architecture protocol; and (3) assemble the components with a newly developed, Component Builder Component. The resulting beam dynamics application will allow the Synergia framework to evolve simultaneously with hardware platforms. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the Applicant: The technology should lead to a range of high-performance components that are suitable for developing accelerator physics simulations
