Research abstract
Geothermal systems face significant challenges due to scaling, which occur from pressure and temperature fluctuations that cause minerals like silicates and carbonates to precipitate and form blockages in rock fractures, well casings, and equipment. These blockages reduce efficiency, increase operational costs, and may require system shutdowns for maintenance. The Department of Energy (DOE) has a strong interest in advancing sustainable and efficient geothermal energy technologies to improve energy output and reduce environmental impacts. This project addresses the issue of scaling in geothermal systems by developing a chemical-free solution that integrates nanobubbles and superhydrophobic riblet surfaces. These technologies work synergistically to provide a continuous, low-maintenance approach that prevents scaling and corrosion, enhancing the efficiency and operational lifespan of geothermal wells and equipment. The solution is designed to reduce the frequency of interventions and minimize the need for system shutdowns. In Phase I, the focus will be on assessing the technical feasibility of the system. This involves studying how nanobubbles, which trap scaling ions, interact with superhydrophobic riblets, which prevent mineral adhesion. A laboratory scaled system will be tested under simulated varying geothermal conditions to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing scaling. The results from Phase I will guide the development of a pilot-scale demonstration system in future phases. If successful, the project has strong commercialization potential. The technology can be retrofitted into existing geothermal infrastructure, providing operators with a cost-effective, maintenancefree method for scaling prevention. Beyond geothermal applications, this technology could also be utilized in industries facing similar scaling and corrosion challenges, such as oil and gas, mining, and water treatment. The chemical-free solution aligns with sustainability goals by reducing reliance on harmful chemicals, contributing to cleaner energy production and lowering the environmental impact.
