Research abstract

The problem being addressed is the formation of mineral scales, particularly calcium carbonate and silica, in geothermal wells. This scaling significantly reduces the efficiency of geothermal energy production by clogging pipes and reducing fluid flow, leading to costly maintenance and operational downtime. The project seeks to develop advanced, thermally stable ionic liquid-based inhibitors to mitigate scale formation. The project addresses scaling in geothermal wells by developing ester/amide functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) as novel, thermally stable scale inhibitors. These ILs will be designed to interact with scale-forming minerals like calcium carbonate and silica, preventing their crystallization and accumulation in geothermal systems. This approach offers a solution to the challenges faced by traditional inhibitors, which degrade at high temperatures and require frequent maintenance. In Phase I, the research will focus on synthesizing and characterizing ester/amide functionalized ionic liquids tailored for geothermal scale inhibition. The ILs will undergo thermal stability testing, and their scale inhibition efficiency will be evaluated using synthetic geothermal brines. Additional tests will examine the compatibility of these ILs with corrosion inhibitors and assess their environmental impact. The results will help refine the ILs for further development in Phase II. The successful development of these ionic liquid-based scale inhibitors will provide significant commercial benefits for the geothermal energy sector by reducing operational downtime and maintenance costs. These ILs can also be applied in other industries that experience high-temperature scaling, such as oil and gas, and power generation. The project aligns with renewable energy goals by improving geothermal efficiency, thereby promoting sustainable energy production and reducing environmental impact.
