Research abstract

The proposed program provides for the development of advanced RANS/LES CFD methodology to permit the evaluation and design of advanced fuel injection concepts to enhance mixing and combustion in scramjets. These concepts will result in longer range andshorter time to target for next generation interceptor missiles. Passive and active (oscillatory/pulsatile) concepts will be evaluated with an emphasis on high frequency injection concepts shown to be most effective in this environment. Best conceptswill be assessed via simulation of their inclusion in an operational Mach 8-12 engine and overall performance gains will be quantified versus the baseline engine. A design optimization study will be performed to design a high frequency supersonic fuelinjector that can readily be integrated into an operational system.
