Research abstract

The long-term storage of CO2 in underground reservoirs presents challenges in monitoring CO2 plume movement due to subsurface complexities. Current methods lack the sensitivity and accuracy needed for effective tracking, leading to potential safety concerns in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). MagiQ proposes a novel fiber optic-based electromagnetic (EM) field sensor capable of detecting electric fields generated by CO2 movement in deep boreholes. This system will overcome limitations of traditional methods by offering a more accurate, real-time monitoring solution for subsurface CO2 interactions. In Phase I, we will design and simulate a passive electric field vector sensor with sensitivity down to 10 nV/m. Using tunable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS), we will measure electric field variations to assess the movement of CO2. The Phase I work will include benchtop prototype development and validation through simulations to demonstrate the feasibility of this sensor in extreme borehole conditions. The successful development of this technology will enhance the safety and reliability of CCS projects, ensuring long-term CO2 storage. Additionally, this technology could be applied in geothermal energy production, oil recovery, and environmental monitoring. It offers significant commercial potential in the energy and environmental sectors as regulations and market demand for effective carbon management increase.
