Research abstract

The U.S. Army needs to replace depleted uranium ammunition with a safer, sustainable material. The unique material properties of Depleted Uranium (DU) make it highly suitable for armor piercing ammunition. DU’s high density of 19.07 g/cm3 delivers high kinetic energy, and its unique Adiabatic Shear Banding (ASB) properties cause rounds to “self-sharpen” as the round penetrates a material. In order to meet the Army’s needs, Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) will develop the Additively Manufactured, Micro-structured, Tungsten-alloy Penetrators (AMMTAP), a kinetic penetrator round with internal micro-structures engineered to replicate the shear banding properties of DU with a high-density material.
