Research abstract

Systems & Processes Engineering Corporation (SPEC) proposes to develop an advanced digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) tht incorporates digital frequency modulation capabilities designed to defeat modern threat systems. The Advanced DRFM will provide an accurate representation of platform signture characteristics such as target range extent, Doppler shifts, phase and amplitude shifts, and polarization shifts. The Advanced DRFM will be capable of simulating the complete signature of an extended target, such as a large transport aircraft, which has numerous EM scattering sites. A high speed programming interface will permit real-time update of each composite signature component. The Advanced DRFM design is based on digital modulation techniques developed by the Air Force and SPEC in previous generations of DRFMs. SPEC's current DRFM Modulator operates on in-phase and quadrature phase signal components and provides digital frequency modulation and time delay, and is designed for operation to 500 MSPS at 12-bits of resolution. The proposed Advanced DRFM architecture operates on a single time-domain sampled data stream, computing thein-phase and quadrature components from the real data, and can be implemented in Silicon or GaAs technology for narrow band or wide band operation, respectively.
