Research abstract

The widespread use of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (P-HEVs) will require batteries with improved energy density. An improved energy density will lead to longer operating times and improved system efficiency. This project will explore the development of an advanced anode to increase the battery¿s energy density. In particular, the project will involve the demonstration of a reversible anode capacity of 2200 mAh/g and fully-constructed cells with an energy density of 290 Wh/kg. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to the application to HEVs and P-HEVs, the anode material should find use as a drop-in replacement technology for commercial lithium ion cells used in various portable power applications including laptop computers, cell phones, and PDAs.
