Research abstract

Achieving optimal readiness (A0) for Aegis surface combatants is critical, especially as the Navy faces operational challenges in a demanding geopolitical environment. Traditional reliance on static technical manuals, such as CPDDs, CSTOMs, IETMs, and QRGs, has led to inefficiencies in Aegis Integrated Logistics and Support (ILS). A significant issue is the limited search capabilities of these documents, often forcing sailors to manually find solutions, which delays diagnostics and repairs and strains Navy resources. In response, In-Depth Engineering Corporation (IEC) proposes the Navy Artificial Intelligence Logistics Support for Aegis (NAILS-A) solution. NAILS-A integrates Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance user interaction with technical documentation. NAILS-A will improve the efficiency and quality of troubleshooting by allowing sailors to input queries in natural language and receive relevant information quickly through an intuitive interface. The NAILS-A system will leverage the MEAN stack (MongoDB, Express, Angular, Node.js) and TypeScript to develop a web-based interface. The project involves conducting trade studies to select optimal LLMs, designing a robust system architecture, optimizing models through pruning and quantization, and creating a user-friendly GUI. The result will be a comprehensive and efficient system for enhancing Aegis ship capabilities.
