Research abstract

The proposed direct to Phase II (DP2) SBIR will deliver an interim capability to the U.S. Army that will define a baseline proof of concept (PoC) in developing an efficient, radio-agnostic Software Defined RadioHead (SDRH) system. The PoC will provide much of the baseline infrastructure for follow on development of a field-deployable version of the system to be developed during a Phase III SBIR or follow on effort. Fairwinds Technologies (FWT) proposes a DP2 solution utilizing a smart remote antenna solution (the Remote RadioHead assembly) composed of multiple subarray antenna assemblies that can be tuned to a set of simultaneous demonstration bands. Additionally, the RadioHead assembly provisions the necessary filtering, amplification, and signal conversion capabilities for signal transfer to the modems. The band tuning configuration of the Remote Radiohead Assembly is controlled via software located in a remote CMOSS/MORA compliant chassis, that is co-located with the Modems. The CMOSS/MORA chassis utilizes FWT developed signal agnostic processing intended to route traffic from multiple bands to a series of fixed connection modems. This DP2 SBIR will leverage foundational technology established through the prior research and development from FWT, in collaboration with Sciens Innovations and L3Harris Tactical Communication Division. For development of the DP2 SDRH SBIR, FWT has partnered with Sciens Innovations to bring collaborative expertise in the areas of antenna management through digital signal processing on ruggedized platforms conforming to C4ISR/EW Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS). The CMOSS solution that will be implemented for the SDRH will utilize a Modular Open RF Architecture (MORA), which will support facilitation of the signal transport between the Remote RadioHead Assembly and the SDRH Baseband Processing Blade.
