Research abstract
Non-encrypted, noise-masked RF communication is a significant technological advancement in the field of secure communications. By masking communications with noise, the signal becomes difficult to detect and intercept. Adversaries attempting to eavesdrop will encounter what appears to be random noise, making it challenging to identify and decode the actual communication. This method reduces the likelihood of detection by minimizing identifiable transmission characteristics, thereby providing a stealthy mode of communication. Non-encrypted, noise-masked communication provides a low probability of detection and intercept, which is crucial in tactical scenarios where maintaining communication stealth is vital for operational success. This technique can be applied across various communication platforms and devices, making it a versatile solution for secure communication needs. It can be integrated with existing communication infrastructure, providing an additional layer of security without requiring significant changes to current systems. The implementation of noise masking is generally less complex and more cost-effective compared to sophisticated encryption systems. This can result in lower development and maintenance costs. In Phase II effort Nokomis will implement Noise Masked Communication System (NMCS), which efficiency and robustness has been proven by Phase I results. NMCS will be implemented on Nokomis manufactured SWaP System in a Package (SiP) based on miniaturized Nokomis proprietary RF sensor with hypersensitivity (-170 dBm) Hiawatha. Such system H-SiP also houses a digital signal processing FPGA based computational module and large memory resources of 256 GB and has TRL 6. As an extra communication security layer, the signal already masked by noise will be transmitted by RF waves using orthogonal polarization. Nokomis embedding and extraction of a communication signal is based on a proprietary algorithm derived for control and manipulation of eigenvalues spectral properties of the communication signal embedded in noise with specific and strongly negative (down to – 20 dB) Signal to Noise Ratio. Results of Phase I demonstrated robust capability (98-100%) of the NMCS to extract the embedded signal equally efficient for binary or continuous wave signals. Non-encrypted, noise-masked RF communication represents a strategic enhancement in secure communication technologies. By leveraging noise to mask the signal, it provides a robust, resilient, and cost-effective solution that enhances security and operational effectiveness in various military and defense applications.
