Research abstract

The evolution of worldwide threats Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) warfighters must address has created new and urgent needs for advanced capabilities to gain superior situational awareness in the identification and location of enemy advanced warfighting assets and targets.  Nokomis’ Hiawatha System in Package (H-SiP) Radio Frequency (RF) sensor has been demonstrated to have superior sensitivity, performance and Size Weight and Power (SWaP). The combined SWaP and system performance provides a novel means to detect, identify and geolocate low power emitters, including unintended electronic RF signatures.  Maturation of the H-SiP technology is critical and provides SOCOM/AFSOC with a novel means for target identification and location that can be implemented onto a variety of platforms of interest, including small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and seekers thereby adding an important capability for the warfighter in complex operational environments.  Under the proposed effort Nokomis will mature, ruggedize and perform Test and Evaluation (T&E) on the H-SiP sensor to prepare for integration onto a platform of interest and an operational assessment. The AFSOC, SOCOM, Air Force, and the DoD in general, have a critical need for the ability for the detection, identification, and location of electronic targets of interest for a variety of applications from a low SWaP, high performance RF sensor system. The following objectives will be met to mature the H-SiP sensor in order to meet SOCOM and Air Force’s requirements for reliable and accurate RF sensing. Objective 1:   Maturation of the H-SiP sensor for operational assessment and manufacturabilityObjective 2:   Complete test and evaluation of H-SiP in coordination with Air Force, AFSOC, and SOCOM to verify system performanceObjective 3:   Complete Flight testing of H-SiP in coordination with Air Force, AFSOC, and SOCOM to verify system performance in operational environmentObjective 4:   Deliver H-SiP two (2) sensor hardware package, including Operation Manuals and Interface Control Document (ICD), for integration onto an AFSOC platform of choice for Operational Assessment
