Research abstract
78799S At present there exists no convenient means by which to access a grid seamlessly from Matlab, a widely used tool for scientific, engineering, and financial analysis. Yet, an integration between the Matlab and the grid would offer the best of both worlds: the rapid analysis/design/prototyping capabilities of Matlab and the high-performance/collaborative-backend offered by a grid. This project will develop middleware consisting of Matlab scripts and java objects that enables Matlab users to seamlessly submit their computational jobs to the grid. Phase I will: (1) define the MatGrid toolkit requirements; (2) specify the toolkit operating system environment; (3) specify a test problem; (4) specify the MatGrid toolkit architecture; (5) complete a preliminary implementation of the MatGrid toolkit; 6) demonstrate the MatGrid toolkit on the test problem; (7) document the test results; (8) prepare software documentation; and (9) install the MatGrid toolkit orototype on a CD-ROM. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The Matlab interface for grid computing should provide increased efficiency, better collaboration among researchers on a global scale, increased utilization of existing computing resources, and an ability to solve larger problems faster.
